How Your Recyclables are Processed

Currently, Metal, Glass and Plastic (MGP) recyclables collected by DSNY are delivered to three different SMR facilities in the Bronx, Queens and Jersey City.
SMR uses a variety of equipment as well as manual sorting to separate the MGP into different commodities. Processing equipment includes: screens, magnets, optical sorters, bag openers, shredders and balers.
Most if not all commodities produced at SMR's Bronx and Queens facilities are barged to Jersey City. From its Jersey City facility, SMR transports products to customers by ship, rail and truck.
Products produced from MGP include:
- Various grades of plastics including PET HDPE
- Tin cans
- Shredded scrap steel
- Aluminum cans and foil
- Other non-ferrous metals
- Recycled glass aggregate
